Deputy Inspector General TK Sathish Chandran, Commander Coast Guard, Awarded Tatrakshak Medal

Deputy Inspector General TK Sathish Chandran Commander Coast Guard, Kerala and Mahe, a native of Thiruvilwamala, Kerala has been awarded TATRAKSHAK MEDAL (GALLANTRY) by President of India, on the occasion of Independence Day. The honour has been bestowed on the DIG for his courageous and astute leadership during the Command of ICGS Samar. ICGS Samar was involved in the capture of the pirate mother vessel Prantalay –II on 6th February 2011.

During the entire operation the officer exhibited an astute sense of aggressive tactics with correct evaluation and solutions to highly volatile developing situation. The episode, the first of its kind in the annals of the Indian Coast Guard Maritime Operations, was fraught with grave danger to men and material. However, the immense courage shown by the officer in counter attacking the pirate vessel with only small arms and achieving great success with nil own damage is laudable and commendable, said the award citation.
