Coast Guard Responds To Oil Spill From MV RAK Carrier

Since PM 06 Aug 11 oil has been observed leaking from the sunken vessel Rak Carrier at an approximate rate of 1.5 – 2 tons per hour. Coast Guard ship Samudra Prahari on patrol immediately responded and used oil spill dispersant to neutralize spilled oil. Operation ‘Paryavaran Suraksha- 2/2011’ has been launched by the Coast Guard.

Aerial recce AM 07 Aug indicated spread of oil upto 07 nm from the sunken vessel. Coast Guard has pressed another vessel ICGS Sankalp for augmenting oil spill response in area.

Not withstanding this, coastal authorities have been advised to maintain strict vigil and prepare for contingency. State authorities have also been advised to direct fishermen to refrain from fishing in the vicinity of affected area.
